I know I say that question and your mind starts going and bringing up answers like; it is the type of music we play, or it is singing with the congregation on Sunday mornings, or maybe you think of a scripture that refers to worship. Sometimes we can even think of actions that we do like giving or hearing the word as worship.

Scripture has a lot to say about worship, both in the old and new testament. As we look into the meaning of the word, evaluate your heart and see what God might be calling you to shift in your thinking.

The word worship comes from the Old English and it means “worth-ship.” What are we giving worth? Or what are we acknowledging worth to? Does it matter how we do it?

Colossians 3:16–17
[16] Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. [17] And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Even in this short verse we see that worship is not just a feeling but a life in response to who God is and what he has done. Bruce Leafblad defines worship as, “Communion with God by his grace as I center my mind’s attention and my heart’s affection on the Lord, humbly glorifying God in response to his greatness and His word.” Through life our call is to center our hearts affection on the Lord.
