Sermon Outline for Sunday June 1, 2025

LUKE 22:24-30, THE DESCENT & DESPAIR OF PRIDE

Sin spreads. Tiny sins become larger sins. And by the time the inferno of sin has passed through your life, it causes irreperable damage to you and to those around you. Today we will spend our entire sermon considering one particular sin, the sin of pride. Like a little flame, pride can be burning ever so subtly in the back of our heart, seemingly innocuous, and yet if that flame is alive, you get in just the right situation at just the right time, and that little flame of pride can destroy you.
1. The Argument (Luke 22:24)
First, we will take a look at the disciple's argument that caused Jesus to teach on humility. Their pride was swelling inside of them. We'll discuss the nature of pride and how to spot it in our lives.
2. The Admonition (Luke 22:25-26)
Second, we'll consider Christ's teachings that we must become like "children" and "servants" and ask what it is about these two categories of people that so exemplifies Jesus' point.
3. The Archetype (Luke 22:27)
Jesus uses himself as the archetype, the example, to follow of true humility. This is important because it reveals the heart that must fuel the humility we are to aim for.
4. The Affirmation
Jesus affirms that these disciples have "stayed with me in my trials." This is affirmation that even though they have done it poorly at times, they have become like a "child" and a "servant" and God will reward them as he promised.
