Sermon Outline for March 30th, 2025

Luke 19:1-10, Zacchaeus

Primary Doctrine:  Regeneration (new birth). Zacchaeus is a corrupt tax collector who has become rich by defrauding his neighbors. In a surprise move, Jesus meets Zacchaeus and spends time in his home. The crowd is offended but cannot deny that, after meeting Jesus, Zacchaeus is a new man. Luke gives us the saga of Zachaeus’s regeneration in three parts: Jesus seeks him, Jesus saves him, and Jesus sanctifies him.
1. How Does Zacchaeus Meet Jesus?
Like a Good Shepherd, Jesus disregards the crowds (the “ninety-nine” of Luke 15:4), walks right up to Zacchaeus’ tree and commands him to “hurry and come down.” Jesus seeks him, and He finds him.
2. When Exactly is Zacchaeus Regenerated?
Luke doesn’t tell us the exact moment that Jesus saves him, but there are indicators. First, when Jesus commands him, Zacchaeus obeys (verses 5–6). Second, he brings Jesus into his home, which in Scripture stands for knowing Jesus in a life-changing way (Rev. 3:20). Third, Zacchaeus calls Jesus “Lord” (verse 8) right before he announces his new lifestyle of generosity and kindness. Surely this man has been regenerated.
3. What Is the Result of Zacchaeus Being Regenerated?
Jesus declares him a “son of Abraham,” meaning he shares in Abraham’s faith and belongs to Christ (Rom. 4:16; Gal 3:7-9, 29). Before, Zacchaeus had loved his possessions, defrauded his neighbors, and didn’t know Jesus (verse 3). Now he loves Jesus, reimburses his neighbors, and gives half his possessions to the poor! Jesus is sanctifying Zacchaeus, making him holy.
